We need to create a Greener Sarasota

I drove to and from Orlando this week (not energy efficient) and listened to More Hip than Hippie Podcast it really is fun and educational. This week is Green Buildings (part 3) other shows have been about Recycling, Local Farming, Healthy Cookware - and they drink a good local beer ... Show notes on their website are a great place for links on their topics.

Dori & Val discuss the 6 core areas of building green:

  1. Incorporate passive systems.
  2. Xeriscape. Landscape with native plants & using water efficiently.
  3. Durability. Build quality, durable structures that will last.
  4. Sourcing materials: Incorporate salvaged, recycled, & sustainably harvested materials to minimize construction waste
  5. Maintaining healthy indoor and outdoor air quality with appropriate building techniques & materials
  6. Buy Energy Efficiency. Choose energy-efficient & water-saving appliances & fixtures.

LEED Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Green Building Rating System - is a voluntary, consensus-based national standard for developing high-performance, sustainable buildings. Members of the U.S. Green Building Council representing all segments of the building industry developed LEED and continue to contribute to its evolution.

Zero Emissions Research & Initiatives ZERI is a global network of creative minds seeking solutions to world challenges. The common vision shared by the members of the ZERI family is to view waste as resource and seek solutions using nature's design principles as inspiration.

Zero Waste is a new way of looking at our waste stream. Instead of seeing used materials as garbage in need of disposal, discards are seen as valuable resources. A pile of "trash" represents jobs, financial opportunity, and raw material for new products.

Is the Green Building Council's
popular and respected "green certification" program heavy on costs and paperwork, and low on actual results?
