I have never been on a SCAT bus..

If you want the Sarasota County Area Transit site go here

Ok I will admit up front I have never ridden on a SCAT bus in normal service. I knew we had them... they had the advertising wrapped all around them. I didn't know were they go, how much they cost or how often they run.

I was invited to a meeting to discuss the "future of the County's transit system." I was intrigued enough that I went to the meeting which as facilitated by Alan Hoffman founder of "The Mission Group" that works with organizations interested in public transportation and urban development.

Once the meeting got started it was clear what the issue is. The bus system currently serves several very unique groups of people. The majority of people at the meeting represented people not able to drive - the old, the blind or those having other physical "issues" that do not allow them to drive. The other group being the "poor" that do not have cars.

I also learned that most of the bus routes run once an hour and stop at 6 or 7pm. and of course only go where they go and don't run on weekends? (not sure web page doesn't say...)

None of this is good news to get me out of my car. After looking at the county web site I found a bus schedule for the #17 bus that seems to stop only a few blocks from my house and goes downtown. I also learned that the bus costs 50 cents. So can I take the bus from my house to downtown for "first Friday" on Palm Ave this weekend? Not unless I am leaving by 6:45 ...

More on transit later..

Blaming Republicans for poor SCAT service

You know, you lose all credibility when you blame Republicans for all the bus woes. Why not put it where it belongs? On incompetent government beauraucrats

Where is SCAT heading?

Since the unannounced COUP on March 26, 2007, the service has gone downhill even further. What was once a fairly direct trip downtown on #15 now involves a 25 minute layover at the airport, because the connecting bus pulls out just ahead of the incoming one - and it costs twice as much now, too - so that the bus that used to continue on to downtown sits at idle for 25 at the airport, while the one from downtown does, too. Two buses, two drivers, crappy service, DOUBLE the price, DOUBLE the time!
And if I want to go to Bradenton, it costs THREE times as much as before, in addition to taking DOUBLE the time, because of the layover.
Did I mention that they got an additional $5 million dollars make these changes to "improve" the service, and hire some (undoubtedly Republican) consultants?
Yeah, they fired all the old bus drivers that knew the routes and the passengers, too.
What's next? Well, the service is going to get even worse, as the consultants "tweak the system". They are interested in STATISTICS, not actual customer service. In a memo about the change seen at the terminal downtown, the change was justified as improving their "on-time performance". It doesn't matter to them that the cost to riders and the time required increases exponentially - they justify everything by statistics (the same justification is used for the FCAT disaster).
Don't be surprised if Vern Bu(s)chanan gets some funding so that the bus system can be "PRIVATIZED" to one of his buddies, along with a big government subsidy to get it going...
They have already seen to it that expectations have been drastically lowered...

And by the way, it seems like there are a lot more "Lord bless you" to be heard form the new drivers - who said faith-based initiatives aren't stronger than ever?
Too bad these drivers are much less friendly and eager to help customers - but they don't have to be any more - it's like the new Civil Service...

Why People Don't Take the Bus

An example of why "people don't take the bus."

645 leave
755 arrive 1hr 10 mins travel time
+50 mins waiting on connection
845 leave
857 final arrive

423 leave
435 arrive 12 mins
+40 mins waiting on a connection
515 leave
616 final arrive 1hr 1min travel time

Total Travel Time: 2hrs 11mins
Time Spent Standing Around: 1hr 30mins

Total time to take the bus
for what would be 1hr and a 30mins
TOTAL on the SAME ROUTE in a car (not using I75)

3Hrs and 31mins

vs what takes in a car
1 hour using smart routes or 1 and a
half using the same routes as the bus

They Will tell you that there is no ability
for them to expand bus routes due to the
lack of ridership at certain times. The
fack is they fail to expand on this lack of
ridership as it is their justification to
the perpetuating the old system.

Quite simply poor management at the finest.

The bus section is

The bus section is completely mismanaged and nobody seems to want to admit it. They hold alot of meetings, but nothing ever changes. I also wonder if all of the people at these meetings have not ever been on the bus either. I wanted to attend one of them, but of course, have trouble getting there. (Big surprise, remember, I take the bus!)

The Sheriff Deputies in Sarasota are quick to illegaly pull people over (marking some story such as you were speeding, which of course they cannot prove, but neither can you prove you were not).

There should be a law against taking people's Driver Licenses when there is not adequate public transportation.

Let's see...the population is growing...development is booming...let's pave over the railroad tracks to make a bike path.

Face it, there are alot of people in this area with their head up their b***.

Isn't it ridiculous?

I found out that the busses in Sarasota don't run on Sunday because one day, shortly after I moved here, I waited at a bus stop for an hour and a half.

And 6pm? What the hell is that? Talk about useless.

SCAT Buses

I am just a little suprised to find that a very common "google" search that brings people to my blog is "Sarasota SCAT bus schedule" where they find this post where I admit I have never bee
