This new project has gotten lots of press lately. Read one of the SHT articles for what many other people think about the project.
The project already has a web site pineapplesquare.biz and a PR firm. The Isaac Group (the developers) are certainly doing the full court press to get everyone behind the project.. even I was invited to the open house at the Ritz ... really sorry I could not attend due to my crazy life ... Honestly I would like walking in the area I am sure it would be a people magnet ... and am sure the wife and kid would be in shopping heaven.

Phase one of Pineapple Square has witnessed the opening of Brooks Brothers and Sur La Table, with Hyde Park Steak House currently under construction. A visit to downtown will illustrate the Pineapple Square project. A new City Place Residences Sales Center was recently built and has opened at 1480 Main Street........drop in for a cup of coffee.

Pineapple Square's better than a residential high-rise
I like the trend toward "mixed use" buildings with retail space at street level and living space above and behind the shops and restaurants. I remember thinking when I first came to this area that it would be nice to live in downtown Sarasota and have lots of nice shops and restaurants within walking distance. Then I checked prices...
Anyway, Pineapple Plaza looks like it's going to be a great place to live for those with incomes beyond what we working people pull in, and I'll probably take my wife to some of the restaurants now and then if they're any good.
And hey! Maybe if I lose my job one day and can't find anything better, I'll end up serving the Rich in one of those shops. There's bus service between my frowzy Bradenton neighborhood and snooty downtown Sarasota, so it's possible to live here and work there.
Aside from making a neighborhood more attractive in general, it's good to have commercial activity mixed in with residential because at least it creates *some* jobs beyond cleaning apartments for overmonied condomites who claim they "live" in Florida (typically to duck state income taxes elsewhere) but really only spend part of the year here.
I enjoy the direction downtown Sarasota is going. It's a real, genuine downtown with an interesting mix of businesses. There aren't too many places like it in the U.S., and hardly any with such great weather.
