We went to Ed Smith Stadium to see the wall Saturday morning...
I have seen the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington DC several times so I kind of knew what to expect. Even though it was in the outfield of a baseball stadium it still is a powerful symbol commemorating the soldiers.
Just one story of the "emotional power" of the wall - I saw a group of Russian sailors at the wall with the same look as most everyone else there (pretty much teary eyed..). They understood it is a monument to the foot soldier that just wanted to do their job and get back home... same as them.
Of course Viet Nam was a very dificult time for our country
No matter what you think (if you were around - I was a kid) we owe our gratitude to those that served. I didn't get to go to the big cermony in the evening but I just hope it went well -- I would be disappointed to hear any bad behavior aimed at one of the speakers spoil the event...

When the wall came to
When the wall came to Sarasota in April 2005, I was just finishing my time in high school. I volunteered that same Saturday morning to assist people at the site. At that point, I was a JROTC cadet, getting ready to join the military. It was an experience I don't see myself forgetting anytime soon. The atmosphere while I was there that weekend was something I had never felt before.
