Foundation wants land for affordable housing

By WILL ROTHSCHILD

SARASOTA COUNTY -- In what would be the first project of its kind in Sarasota County, the Gulf Coast Community Foundation of Venice has signaled its intent to pay $16 million for 145 acres of land on Laurel Road, east of Interstate 75, to build a large development of work force housing.

Work force housing is generally defined as that which professionals such as teachers, police officers and nurses can afford. It has become a buzzword in Sarasota County, and in communities across the country, as home values have soared beyond the reach of many average income earners.

This sounds like a great step for the foundation and the community. This is still early in the process so we can't comment on the specifics of how they will keep it affordable.

Here is much more information on the Sarasota County website about Affordable Community Housing.
