Cyburbia "the urban planning portal" has a good thread on accessory dwelling units.

This may become a big topic in Sarasota as the planning department has included them as a secondary use in all single family residential zones. As with most things there are 2 sides. Seeing some of the restrictions listed I could warm up to it. But I would be very surprised if the restrictions really hold up either in court or reality.
