As an occasional bike rider I was interested to read The Temporary Urbanism of Critical Mass an Op-Ed about people taking back cities from cars by Rocco Pendola posted on Planetizen.
There are different levels to think about this issue .... one is having a resource like the Pinellas Trail in Sarasota. We are slowly getting there. See this story on a new rail trail for Sarasota County and another link to the Sarasota MURT.
Another deeper level is really building a city that is bike and pedestrian friendly. That seems to be what Critical-Mass works for. There will always be more cars so lets also allow bikes and walkers better use of the road system.
If Sarasota as a city is willing to spend millions of dollars for 100's of parking spaces why don't we have more bike paths or at least clear the tree branches from the existing bike / walk-able areas….
